“Mama Sbarro” dies at 90
Pizza company matriarch Carmela Sbarro died July 7, 2012, in an assisted-living home in Huntington Terrace, where she had lived for the past eight years. She was 90.

Carmela Sbarro who, with her husband Gennaro, founded the Sbarro pizza chain, died on Friday. She was 90.
In the 1950s, the couple immigrated from Naples to Brooklyn and opened up Sbarro’s Salumeria, the Italian deli that eventually grew into an international chain. With nearly 1,000 locations in 30 countries, Melville-based Sbarro is the world’s largest mall-focused Italian restaurant chain. The family sold their interest in the company in 2007.
