Sandwiches are superstars at the new Roast Sandwich House, which opened last month on Rte. 110 in Melville in the space that last housed Dino’s Joint.

Co-owners Joe Cordaro and Matthew Doyle are childhood friends who attended the Culinary Academy in Syosset together. Cordaro went on to cook at CoolFish in Syosset, Doyle at Blackstone Steakhouse in Melville. The two met up again at City Cellar Wine Bar in Westbury.

Their new counter-service spot is small and stylish, the room trimmed in white wainscoting with walls the color of  fresh-cut avocados. Gleaming metal tables and chairs add to the minimalist look.

Almost everything is made in-house – roast meats, soups, salads and dressings. The one item that’s not  – sweet potato Tater Tots – would be hard to improve upon.

The sandwiches are cleverly presented in metal casseroles. At a recent lunch, I had a half and half combo ($7.99): a decadently good braised brisket and grilled cheese made with white Cheddar, Swiss and havarti on sourdough accompanied by a half portion of lively roast vegetable chopped salad. My compadre’s hickory smoked turkey sandwich with Monterey Jack, pepper salsa, honey-chipotle glazed bacon and avocado ranch dressing on an onion hero ($8.29) proved both smoky and delicious.

Roast Sandwich House is at 827 Walt Whitman Rd., Melville, 631-629-4869, roastsandwichhouse.com
