Open in East Rockaway: Althouse 1848
Althouse 1848 is new to the restaurant scene in East Rockaway. The bi-level gastropub occupies a landmark structure that dates back to 1848. On the ground level, there's a bar and outdoor patio; a dining room with another bar occupies the second floor.
In charge of the kitchen is Franco Maffettone, who was corporate chef for the Uncle Jack’s Steakhouses in Manhattan and Bayside. He also cooked at the Ruth’s Chris Steakhouses in Manhattan and Tarrytown and at Houston’s in Manhattan.
On Maffettone’s menu: jumbo lump crab cakes ($11.95), Buffalo chicken wings ($9.95), orecchiette with broccoli rabe and sausage ($16.95), a veggie burger ($10.95), a classic burger ($10.95) and a three-day brined pork chop ($18.95).
The restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sunday brunch will kick in shortly, according to Maffettone.
Althouse 1848 is at 101 Althouse Ave., East Rockaway, 516-341-0020.
