As the kind of person who brakes whenever I see banners flying outside a restaurant, it was all I could do not to run off the road when spying flags over the awning of Uncle Joe’s Pizza & Restaurant in Mattituck. Interestingly, the casual new pizza place —  which serves slices as well as whole pies — is situated right next door to A Mano, a fine dining restaurant offering more of an artisanal individual pie experience. Clearly, Mattituck has room for both.

I ordered up a slice of cheese Neapolitan, which turned out to be light with a crisp  crust,  a balanced confluence of sauce and cheese on top. It disappeared in no time.

As I later learned, the place is owned by Steven Sciara, whose father, Joseph, has owned Uncle Joe’s Pizza & Restaurant in Hampton Bays for the past 29 years. PIzzaiolo Jimi Hinchy, as it turns out, has also been in the pie-making business for 29 years —  at such places as Primo Pizza in Farmingville and other locations, and Lenny’s Pizza in Jamesport.

Along with pizza, the new Mattituck place offers a full Italian menu. Most people order at the counter, said Sciara, adding that table service is available on request. On the menu: rice ball parmigiana ($5.50), fettuccine carbonara ($16), chicken alla Francese ($17) and shrimp scampi ($21).

Hinchy said he will be turning out an assortment of vegetarian pizzas for Good Friday.

Uncle Joe’s Pizza & Restaurant is at 13500 Main Rd., Mattituck, 631-298-8910.
