P.S. Burgers opens in Mineola

P.S. Burgers, a sliver of a Mineola storefront, entered the crowded Long Island burger arena in early February. It looks to be a strong contender.
In charge of the counter-service place is Carmelo Sapuppo, who owned the former Maxxells in Garden City Park and PastaVino in Mineola. The menu features dressed-up burgers as well as simple ones. Hamburgers and turkey burgers are made with meat purchased at a local butcher and formed into patties on-site. Bison burgers are imported, frozen, from Canada.
Nothing wrong with that, as I found out at a recent afternoon, when I opted for the delectable bison version of the “P.S. Paris” burger, topped with fried egg, sauteed spinach, Gruyere and Dijon honey mustard on a shiny pretzel roll ($7.95). A simple Cheddar burger ($4) featured a juicy, flavorful beef patty. But batter-dipped fries were clearly unworthy of sharing the same plate as either burger. As I learned later, hand-cut fries are sometimes served, most frequently at dinner.
Also on the menu at P.S. Burgers: hot dogs plain and fancy ($3 to $4), salads, such as the classic grilled chicken Caesar ($7.95), sandwiches, such as a churrasco steak sandwich ($8.95), and shakes made with Baci gelato. Among desserts is a house-made brownie with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce ($4).
Sapuppo said he will be opening another P.S. Burgers in Manhattan’s West Village soon.
