Modern Snack Bar, the home-cooking mainstay in Aquebogue, is up to here in Thanksgiving orders, starting with the mashed turnips advertised on its marquee.

But, in addition to its delicious preparation of the root vegetable currently starring at North Fork farm stands, the restaurant also is offering a true Long Island treat: Peconic Bay scallops. The season started earlier this month.

Modern Snack Bar prepares these nutty, sweet locals with minimal fuss. They're broiled, served with a wedge of lemon and tartar sauce, and your choice of vegetables. It costs $24.95. Get them while they last.

Devotees of the restaurant also know that the dining room will be closing for winter. This year, Dec. 15 is the last day. Modern Snack Bar plans to reopen on April 1.
