Penzeys Spices closes in Carle Place

If you have an immediate need for galangal, fenugreek or sumac, get yourself to Carle Place. Penzeys Spices, the only Long Island branch of the Wisconsin-based seasoning chain, is permanently shuttering its doors at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Penzeys’ first Long Island store opened in Huntington in 2006 and closed four years later. In 2010, the Carle Place store opened.

Founder Bill Penzey grew up in his parents’ Milwaukee spice store and, in 1986, started Penzeys Spices, a mail-order catalog. Since then, the publication and its website, penzeys.com, have emerged as one of the nation’s leading sources for spices and herbs.

Through the catalogue or online you can still take your pick of three varieties of cinnamon (Indonesian, Vietnamese and Chinese) available in powder, chunks or sticks; nutmeg from the East and West Indies, vanilla beans and extracts in two strengths; two distinct oreganos — one from Turkey and one from Mexico, French thyme and California dill. Not to mention natural and Dutch cocoa, salad dressing seasonings and Penzeys’ collection of proprietary blends, among them Bicentennial Rub, first produced in 1976 from flavorings that the American colonists would have had access to.

An employee at the Carle Place store would not comment on the reason for the closing and no one at headquarters could be reached. In New York, there are Penzeys Spices in Albany and Buffalo; a store in West Nyack closed in May 2016.
