Pita Station opens in Manhasset
Things are looking up for Long Island gyro-nauts. Last week, The Friendly Greek opened in Seaford, staking its reputation on a gyro made, in house, from marinated slices of lamb. Now Pita Station has twirled into Manhasset, with two house-made gyros, one made of rich, glistening pork, the other of burnished dark-meat chicken. (In a capitulation to public demand, both restaurants also serve the prefabricated ground-lamb-beef gyro that is standard at local Greek eateries.)
The first Pita Station opened in 2014 just across the tracks from the Glen Head LIRR station. Partners Pantelis Mountrakis and George Vatakis chose Manhasset for their second location as the town is relatively underserved by quick-serve eateries. Pita Station takes over the narrow storefront that had been Trattoria Four Four Four and, before that, La Bottega.
Pita Station’s gyro can be had in a platter ($14), in a pita ($8) or in a signature “petite pita” ($5) which, Mountrakis said, is the way it’s done in Greece: A mini-pita is stuffed with gyro meat (pork is most traditional) or souvlaki, tomato, red onion, tzatziki and, here’s the kicker, a handful of excellent, fresh-cut fries before being rolled up into a cone.
Beyond gyros, Pita Station offers souvlaki, triple-decker pita “clubs,” burgers, wraps, salads, soups, Greek-inflected sides and fries in many guises including poutine (with gravy and melted cheese) and Station-style with grated Graviera cheese, Greek oregano and special Station sauce (all $5.50).
Eat in (in the cozy dining room), take out, delivery and catering are all available.
Pita Station is at 444 Plandome Rd., Manhasset, 516-439-5460 and 7 Station Plaza, Glen Head, 516-676-7482, pitastation.com.
