Popular Melville restaurant Frederick's closes after more than 30 years

Frederick's, serving continental cuisine in Melville since 1979, has closed. A decision on when or whether to reopen it is expected soon.
The Wolff family, which owns the establishment that for decades was a destination for business lunches as well as traditional dinners, will discuss the future of the place, said manager Chris Wolff.
"Summer always is slow for us," he said, referring to the seasonal dip in business. He added that the family would decide shortly whether to renovate the restaurant.
When it opened, Frederick's was one of the few formal dining rooms near the Route 110 business corridor. But there has been significant growth in competition in Melville, including the arrival of high-end steak and sushi specialists, as well as spots that offer lighter, varied and more casual cooking.
Frederick's has been known for its old-school, continental-style fare, including dishes such as smoked trout, sauteed Dover sole, roast duck with Bing cherry sauce, rack of lamb, and steaks. New American dishes were added in recent years. "Early bird" dinner specials also were available.
But the sign that identifies the restaurant still refers to "Frederick's Continental Cuisine."
Frederick's is at 1117 Walt Whitman Rd., Melville.
