Rajbhog Cafe
Rajbhog is one of a number of South Broadway's "chaat houses," restaurants that specialize in sweets and vegetarian cooking. "It's a place to have a snack in the middle of the day," explained owner Sheetal Talati, "or to have a vegetarian meal quickly served." While there I tried mightily to conquer my Indoglucophobia (fear of super-sweet Indian desserts), an effort in which I was only partially successful; I can handle the nut candies but not so much the milk-based ones. I loved the dhokla, however, a steamed bread made from gram flour and topped with hot peppers and mustard seed. Another winner: pani poori, fried puffs that you stuff yourself with vegetarian filling, tamarind chutney and a special "water." For $5.95 you can make a meal of a thali, a platter containing five little bowls of vegetarian curry, with a samosa (fried turnover) and a sweet in the middle. This little shop is part of the Rajbhog empire, which includes establishments in New York, New Jersey, Atlanta and Chicago. Rajbhog (the name means the Raj's offering to the gods) also produces a line of snack mixes, available at the store.
