Sabor A Colombia opens new location in Massapequa

Attention, Massapequa: there’s a new Colombian restaurant in town. In mid-July, Sabor A Colombia opened on Carmans Road, a stone’s throw from Sunrise Mall. It’s the second Nassau county restaurant for the Lenis family, whose original location in Levittown has hosted a lively dinner scene since 2010.

Breakfasts — eggs sided with meat, arepa and rice and beans are available daily until 1 p.m. Lunch and dinner menus offer hearty platos típicos like Colombian bandeja (hungry-man mixed grill with beef, fried pork, sausage, beans, egg and ripe plantains) and red beans, simmered with pork trotter and served with thick cuts of pork belly, fried crunchy and curled around heaps of rice.

Zippy, herb-green chimichurri and salsa arrive with every dish, helping to cut through the richness. Cocktails, Colombian beers and wines are available from the bar, which offers front-row seating for soccer games broadcast on TVs overhead.

The Massapequa opening was kind of a "right place, right time" scenario, according to Evelyn Lenis, who runs the place with her husband, Jean Carlo Arcieri and her father, Oscar Lenis.

"The location has been available for a while," Evelyn said, adding that one of the family’s partners was familiar with the property. "It was just this great spot there right there by the mall, and there’s not a Colombian restaurant near Massapequa, so it’s actually been very busy."
