Savino's, Lynbrook: New for pizza, pasta and vino

Savino’s Restaurant & Wine Bar takes over the former digs of Elegante Pizzeria & Restaurant. The new and fully remodeled place is still part pizzeria, but there’s also a formal dining room. And a wine bar commanded by Tony Caracci, known as Tony the Wine Guy. Previously, Caracci worked at Jewel in Melville and, for several years, at Hudson’s Mill in Massapequa.

In charge of the kitchen is a chef known only as Alex, according to co-owner Michael Biancaniello, who could not be persuaded to give a surname. A glance at the restaurant's moderately priced menu reveals such dishes as fried calamari ($9.50), shrimp scampi ($15.95), penne Caprese ($10.95) and baked filet of sole oreganata ($16.95). Considerately, the restaurant marks gluten-free dishes as such.

For the gluten intolerant, there is also a gluten-free “personal” pizza ($10.80). Among regular specialty pizzas is the crispino pie ($19.95), pictured, an extra-thin crust pan pizza layered with broccoli rabe, fresh mozzarella and herbed San Marzano plum tomato sauce. Like many pies on Savino's extensive roster, it's also available by the slice.
