When Victor Ochi was a football player at Stony Brook University, he feasted on quarterbacks . . . and chicken cutlet heros.

While in college, he frequented Se-Port Deli in East Setauket, which is less than two miles from campus. This week, Ochi, who is now on the New York Jets practice squad, became the latest local athlete to be honored by the deli with a hero named after him.

Jets fans may have lost their appetite after watching Monday night’s gut-wrenching 28-3 loss to Arizona. But the hero will at least give those with eclectic taste a little something to cheer about.

Called “The Vic Ochi,” it consists of chicken cutlet, melted American cheese, bacon, French fries, macaroni salad and tomato on a toasted garlic hero. It’s topped with honey mustard, barbecue sauce and hot sauce. The hero costs $11.95.

“We knew he was a hearty eater and he needed a lot of fuel for his playing so we came up with a sandwich that put together many aspects of different food groups,” Se-Port chef Brian Adwar said. “It touches every flavor. Spicy, sweet, salty, tangy. It all comes together very nicely.”

Ochi, a Valley Stream native who was a defensive end at Stony Brook, graduated in 2015 as the program’s career sack leader. The 23-year-old posted a photo of the hero on his Instagram account on Monday, saying, “Huge shoutout to Seport for the love.”

But will the blend of ingredients and size of the hero be enough to satisfy the appetite of a 6-1, 242-pound football player like Ochi?

“Absolutely. This sandwich will keep you full and running,” Adwar said. “I hope he doesn’t eat one right before he plays, but he will be very satisfied after eating this.”
