South Shore BBQ opens in Patchogue with famed pitmaster
South Shore BBQ opened Friday evening in the spacious Patchogue digs that used to house Canz Roadhouse. Since Smokin’ Al’s Bay Shore location closed last year, Bobbique in Patchogue has been going it alone on Suffolk’s South Shore, so this is welcome news for local lovers of smoke. But it gets even better: Tending the fire is Will Breakstone.
Breakstone (nom de fume: Willie B.) is Long Island’s much-decorated pitmaster, owner of the late Willie B’s in Bay Shore, former BBQ maestro at Lily Flanagan’s in Islip and founder of the barbecue benefit WilliePallooza.
His menu is straightforward, headed by smoked brisket and pulled pork ($23/pound), baby back and St. Louis ribs ($28/rack) and BBQ chicken ($11/half bird). These meats are mixed and matched into various platters and sandwiches along with traditional sides such as mac and cheese, pit-smoked beans, coleslaw, cornbread and candied sweet potatoes (with marshmallows).
Manager Jason Day (formerly of Canz in Astoria) said that the bar has 36 craft brews on tap.
South Shore BBQ is at 388 Medford Ave., Patchogue, 631- 654-2269, southshorebbq.com.
