The new Spiro’s Restaurant & Lounge is a commanding presence along Route 25A in Rocky Point. I stopped in to give the place a quick once-over and found a dining room and bar area with a look at once formal and comfortable.

The restaurant is owned by executive chef Spiro Karachopan, who also owns the nearby Sea Basin restaurant. Here, said manager Michelle Farrell, the vibe is "a little more upscale," the place more of a steak house, but one that offers lots of alternatives.

On the menu: An appetizer of scallops wrapped in bacon ($8), a shepherd’s salad ($7), broiled Chilean sea bass ($28), chicken piccata ($21) and a baked lamb shank ($26). On the steak roster: a New York strip ($30), a 22-ounce porterhouse ($34) and a 10-ounce filet mignon ($34). Lighter eaters can opt for a grilled shrimp and fresh mozzarella salad ($14).

The restaurant is open for dinner only and closed Tuesdays.

Spiro’s Restaurant & Lounge is at 4 Patchogue Dr. (Rte. 25A), Rocky Point, 631-744-4100.
