Locust Valley probably has more antique stores per square mile than any other town on Long Island (although Cold Spring Harbor could give it a run for its money). So it was no tragedy when House Antiques closed shop last year and made room for an establishment that has no competition nearby: Stueys Smokehouse BBQ.

The month-old takeout shop has the wood smokers and brief menu of a classic barbecue joint: baby back ribs ($16 for a half rack), pulled pork ($12 for a half pound), brisket ($13), sausage ($12), salmon ($15) and roast chicken ($18 for a whole bird). Sides are sweet potatoes, pit beans, string beans and cornbread.

The small shop is owned by Carrie Morabito, a local resident who owns Friend of a Farmer restaurants in Gramercy Park and Brooklyn Heights. It has a country chic befitting Locust Valley, with a vaulted ceiling and exposed beams, subway tile counters and a lot of stainless steel. Pitmaster Bob Devine has been smoking for nearly 20 years and has worked at Townline BBQ in East Hampton and the New York City establishments Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que and Pig Beach, among other spots.
