Would you eat yourself sick on meatballs for the chance to pocket $1,000?

That Meetball Place has laid down the challenge in honor of National Meatball Day, the meatball equivalent of Christmas.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, thrill seekers at the restaurant’s two locations will have four minutes to gorge on original meatballs. That means downing as many 2.4 ounce, sauce-covered beef-, pork- and veal-packed meatballs as a human can stomach.

“The day is important to us,” said Michael Jordan, general manager of the Patchogue store, adding that he hopes the contest will become an annual event. “We want to celebrate the meatball.”

The long communal table at each location has been set aside for the throwdown, which will have its own emcee — the radio folks at My Country 96.1 will be in Patchogue and Party 105 will be in Farmingdale. A winner will be crowned at each location.

The cost to compete is $30, with registration open right until the bell rings. For everyone else, the restaurant is featuring all-you-can eat meatballs for $19.95.
