The Irish Pub reopens under new ownership in Baldwin
The Irish Pub, a Baldwin institution since 1963, has been renovated and reopened under new ownership. The place, which relocated from its original Sunrise Highway address a few years ago, started serving craft beers and burgers Oct. 10. Robert Humphreys, a bartender at the pub for the past 17 years, has teamed up with lifelong friend Jon Weissman to become co-owners.
They brought in as chef Jamie Zambrano, who last cooked at Anchor Down in Merrick. Zambrano is taking a fresh-from-scratch approach, frying his own potato chips — called crisps here — and hand-cutting potatoes for French fries — known as “chips,” in true Irish fashion. Also on the simple, moderately priced bill of fare: Irish pub nachos (made with “chips,” cheese and bacon), fried pickles, all manner of wings (including a vegan version made with breaded, fried eggplant sticks), a Top o’ tha’ Morning burger (featuring bacon and eggs), a Cobb salad, a Reuben sandwich, shepherd’s pie and, on Friday nights, a fish fry. The costliest item on the menu, at $12.95, is a steak tidbit sandwich on garlic bread.
Bartender Jimmy Buckets, who has been with the place for the past 40 years, continues to preside over the bar.
The Irish Pub is at 834 Merrick Rd., Baldwin; 516-208-5940.
