Long Island is about to lose one of its top Latin American restaurants, included in Newsday's 100 Best Restaurants on Long Island. On Tuesday, Nov. 17, Manka Peruvian Kitchen, tucked away in a Glen Cove strip mall, will serve its last order of ceviche and final rotisserie chicken.
Posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page was this message: “It has been an awesome journey Long Island, but our ride has come to an end. This will be our last week in Long Island. Thank you so much for joining us in this wonderful adventure. Stay connected for Manka’s new location and Chef Boris’ new project.” Chef Boris Torres said that location factored into the restaurant not meeting its financial goals. “We are looking at a couple of locations in Queens,” he said.
Manka Peruvian Kitchen received two and a half stars in August of 2014 and was ranked among the top 10 Cheap Eats restaurants for that year. Credit Torres, whose training in architecture was apparent in the plating of such standouts as a lustrous ceviche, cold green mussels with a bright Peruvian relish and an octopus salad rife with flavor-texture-temperature contrasts. And then, there was that rotisserie chicken — bronze, juicy and savory to the bone. For those who have never tried aeropuerto — a dish that combines Peruvian-Chinese fried rice with lo mein noodles and seafood — there may be no time like the present.
Manka Peruvian Kitchen is at 216 Glen St., Glen Cove, 516-801-1519, mankany.net
