49°Good afternoon

Breakfast this morning at Village Creperie in Huntington.  The café’s motto, “a unique European taste in Huntington” is a little misleading: Despite the French music, French posters and, of course, the predominance of crepes on the menu, the place doesn’t exude a lot of Gallic charm. The rather wan baked goods not from Bindi (the giant Italian dessert wholesaler) appear to be only baked off in the shop. The crepe fillings range widely too, from the Santa Fe (beef, onions, tomatoes, peppers and teriyaki sauce) to the Zorba (feta, tomatoes, spinach, onion and olives).

We stuck to basics. My Monaco, filled with ricotta cheese and apricot preserves, was very good, though a little sweet for breakfast; it would have suited me better as a dessert. My pal, however, thought it was just right, and preferred it to her selection, filled with scrambled eggs, goat cheese and spinach—just what, it turned out, I felt like eating. So we switched.

Despite having a small dining room, Village Creperie seemed not entirely prepared for table service so early in the morning: Water was slow in coming after requested, plates were rather unceremoniously tossed in front of us along with some little napkins, even the plastic flatware didn’t match. This is a shame since I don’t imagine that the crepes travel all that well.

Good cappuccino, though.
