Where to buy jelly doughnuts for Hanukkah

Here's a sampling of local bakeries that make sufganiyot for Hanukkah. If you need a large quantity (say for a latke party), it's wise to call in your order ahead of time.

In addition to traditional apple-raspberry jelly-filled, ZuckerBaker's makes custard-filled doughnuts with either chocolate or vanilla glaze. Regular doughnuts are $2.50; minis are $10 a dozen. All are kosher pareve.

The three branches of The Bakery sell jelly-filled doughnuts year-round but, according to owner Dennis Goldfarb, for Hanukkah the recipe is adjusted to be dairy free (kosher pareve). It's also only during the holiday season that mini doughnuts are available. The black raspberry-filled doughnuts are sprinkled with either powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. Regular doughnuts are $1.50; minis are 75 cents.

Walls' always sells doughnuts, both custard- and jelly-filled, but for Hanukkah, said owner Mark Schechner, "we sell 20, 30 times the quantity of the jelly. We sell tons." Schechner fills the doughnuts with black raspberry jelly and sprinkles them with either confectioners' sugar or cinnamon sugar. They cost $1.30 apiece and are kosher dairy.

Hanukkah is a busy time of year for sisters Rose Fuger and Monica Tarantino, who own this North Bellmore bakery. Fuger, known as the "baking sister," makes Hanukkah jelly doughnuts in regular and miniature sizes. They're finished with either cinnamon or powdered sugar. They are not kosher. The larger doughnuts are 95 cents apiece and half a dozen go for $4.99; minis cost 65 cents each, $6.50 a dozen.

For Hanukkah, Netherlands-born baker Simon Jorna makes a small adjustment in the doughnuts he sells year-round. "They are the same as our jelly doughnuts but come with powdered sugar instead of cinnamon sugar," Jorna said. The doughnuts are kosher dairy. Regular size, 95 cents apiece; half size, 55 cents each.
