Woodro Deli
So, it took me more than 12 years of food reporting on Long Island to visit Woodro Deli. The important thing is that I got there.
I can’t imagine that this lean, mean deli-serving machine looked much different when it opened in 1964. When you walk in, the appetizing and deli meats are to your right, the cash register is to your left, a chicken-soup station (broth, knaidlach, etc.) in the center. Beyond is a stark dining room where each table is set with mustard, cole slaw, a sour pickle and a half sour.
On a recent Saturday afternoon, luck was on my side: there was dark meat turkey to be had, and I ordered the sandwich pictured above. The meat was still warm and moist, needing only a schmear of mustard to make my day.
