Many times, the conventional wisdom you've believed all your life is proven wrong. But other times, that wisdom is shown to be smart and correct, such as this word to the wise: Losing your temper can be dangerous to your heart.

Australian researchers have concluded that an episode of intense anger can trigger a heart attack. The researchers found that in the two hours after a person has an episode of intense anger, the risk of suffering a heart attack is 8.5 times higher. The risk remains elevated for those two hours even if the person has calmed down.

Researchers said a key take-away from their study is that older adults with anger issues — or their loved ones — should take "preventive approaches" such as stress-reduction training. They should also understand the risks and try to steer clear of any potential confrontations that could cause a burst of intense anger.
