Study: Coffee intake affects dementia risk
Your morning cup of coffee may not only get your day started, it may help keep your brain sharp. But more is not better.
Italian researchers who looked at a group of adults ages 65-84 found that "moderate and regular" coffee drinkers were at a lower risk of developing cognitive problems than those who rarely or never drank coffee. Moderate coffee drinking was defined as one or two cups a day. But those moderate coffee drinkers who suddenly increased their coffee drinking by more than a cup per day also significantly raised their risk of cognitive impairment.
Researchers said their findings, to be published next month in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, indicated that moderate coffee drinking may be protective "against cognitive decline and dementia."
