Tip: Free AARP service can help with tax prep
There's still one month left in winter, but if you want to avoid a spring of discontent on April 15, now is a good time to think about your taxes.
AARP is again offering its free Tax-Aide service at scores of local libraries and senior centers. While the service is open to all taxpayers, AARP says its volunteer tax preparers are especially trained to help people 60 and older. You do not have to be an AARP member to use the Tax-Aide service.
To find a Tax-Aide site near you, visit aarp.org/taxaide or call 888-227-7669. Many of the Tax-Aide sites will electronically file your federal and state forms, also for free. When you go, bring all important documents including any W2s and 1099 forms.
The Web site also has a form that allows taxpayers to ask volunteers questions online.
