Volunteers needed to help seniors
Two local human services agencies are offering volunteer opportunities aimed at making life better for seniors who are homebound or institutionalized.
Nassau and Suffolk sponsor ombudsman programs where trained volunteers are sent to nursing homes or assisted-living centers weekly to be advocates for residents and work with administrators to resolve problems and complaints.
To volunteer or to sign up for ombudsman services in Suffolk, call the Family Service League at 631-427-3700, ext. 240. In Nassau, call the Family and Children's Association at 516-466-9718.
The association also is looking for volunteers for its Senior Bill Payer program. After training, you will go to the homes of Nassau seniors to help them organize and pay their bills. Call 516-485-3425, ext. 221.
