Lou Reed (1942-2013) remains an iconic name in the world of music: He was a member of the influential rock band The Velvet Underground and also had a long solo career, during which he created and performed a catalog of experimental and critically acclaimed music (his most successful and recognizable song was "Walk on the Wild Side"). Reed, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, graduated from Freeport High School in 1960.

Andy Kaufman who graduated in 1967 from Great Neck North High School was an eccentric comedic entertainer who got his break on the hit series "Taxi" playing Latka. He died from lung cancer at the age of 35, but his fame continues to live on.

Lenny Bruce attended Wellington C. Mepham High School from 1940-1942, but left to volunteer for the U.S. Navy before graduating. Bruce, born Leonard Alfred Schneider, was a stand-up comedian whose material embraced taboo and counter-culture words and ideas. He was convicted by the State of New York for obscenity in 1964, but was posthumously pardoned in 2003. Bruce died at the age of 40 in 1966.

Navy Seal Lt. Michael P. Murphy graduated from Patchogue-Medford High School in 1994. He was killed in the war in Afghanistan and was commemorated in the 2013 movie "Lone Survivor." Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2007, making him the first Navy Seal to receive this recognition since the Vietnam War.

Francis Ford Coppola attended Great Neck North High School and graduated with the class of 1956. He made it to the final rounds of the rigorous competition, ultimately earning fifth place. Since then, Valentinetti has returned to Long Island to perform at The Paramount in Huntington, and recently dropped his debut album. The Bethpage native graduated from Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in 2013.

While attending East Meadow High School, 1978 graduate Frank Viola was captain of the varsity baseball team. As a pitcher, he tied the school's record for most strikeouts in a single game. Viola went on to play for the Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays through the 1980s and 1990s. During his time with the Twins, he earned the Cy Young Award and helped the team win the World Series in 1987, earning MVP honors in the process.
