A St. James man was arrested late Friday after, police said, he was driving high and critically injured his passenger while fleeing police in Nissequogue.

Suffolk County police said Smithtown Park Rangers approached a suspicious car parked at the Short Beach Town Park gate about 10:20 p.m. The rangers approached the car and the driver, identified at Alberto Guzman, 21, of St. James, sped off though the rangers ordered him to stop.

The rangers followed the 2011 Nissan Maxima in an unmarked car south on Short Beach Road and found the vehicle overturned in the woods off the road. Police said the Nissan knocked over a utility pole before overturning.

Backseat passenger Julian Arango, 19, of Brentwood, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition. Guzman and front seat passenger Eric Gomez, 19, of Nissequogue, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Stony Brook.

Police charged Guzman with driving while under the influence of drugs and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He will be arraigned at a later date.

Suffolk’s Fourth Squad detectives said anyone who witnessed the crash could call 631-854-8452.
