A 27-year-old Medford man was critically wounded Sunday after a domestic dispute in which he was shot by his mother's boyfriend, who then took his own life, Suffolk police said.

Daniel Guevara was listed in critical condition last night at Stony Brook University Medical Center after police said he was shot about 2 p.m. yesterday inside a South Medford home by Charles Kennedy, 66, who then turned the handgun on himself.

Kennedy had returned to the Rustic Avenue home he shared with Guevara's mother, Lynda Wenlund, after a stay at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital for alcohol-related treatment, said Suffolk Detective Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky.

Wenlund, who owns the home about a mile north of Sunrise Highway, told Kennedy she didn't want him living there anymore, Pelkofsky said.

Kennedy then went into another room, got a handgun and shot Guevara and then himself, Pelkofsky said.

The area around the single-story red shingle-and-brick home was cordoned off with yellow police tape Sunday as residents looked on.

Neighbors described the family as quiet and friendly. The neighborhood is mostly safe, except for a recent rash of home break-ins, said resident Aja Fava.

Kennedy was a party boat captain who worked out of Captree State Park in Babylon, Pelkofsky said.

A resident, Nick Constantino, said it is "usually a quiet neighborhood."

He added: "I've always rode my bike around here, went for runs and everything. Nothing ever seemed like something would happen."
