Driver charged with DWI in crash that injured Suffolk Highway Patrol officer, police say
A Lindenhurst woman was charged with driving while intoxicated on Friday night after crashing into a highway patrol vehicle in West Babylon and injuring the officer inside, Suffolk County police said.
Bridgette Acaiturri, 37, was driving a 2006 Ford Expedition west on Sunrise Highway near Exit 40 when she smashed into the back of a Suffolk County patrol vehicle, causing it to spin around and hit a center median wall,, according to a Suffolk County police release.
The highway patrol car was providing a safe perimeter for a slow moving construction vehicle and had its flashing lights on when the crash occurred at 9:25 p.m., the release said.
The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Acaiturri was treated for minor injuries at Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip.
She was charged with driving while intoxicated and will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
