Boy, 13, made threat against school, East Hampton Town Police say
East Hampton Town Police charged a 13-year-old boy Wednesday for allegedly making a threatening social media post against an undisclosed school.
Police said they would not identify the school because the student arrested was a minor. He faces one felony count of making a terroristic threat and one misdemeanor charge of making a threat of mass harm, police said.
The threat was made against a school in the Springs Union Free School District, officials said.
"The student was immediately identified with the help of students who stepped up," Superintendent Debra Winter said. "The district will follow its code of conduct. Just the day before the local police department held assemblies for students on rules and procedures."
The boy doctored a photo of another student, but said the person pictured was not involved in the threat, according to police.
Authorities said there was no credible threat of harm to any students or teachers at the school.
The threat follows several similar online posts or text messages threatening schools on Long Island in recent weeks.
Long Beach school officials called for additional patrols Tuesday, but later determined the threat was a “copycat” and resumed regular school procedures Wednesday.
Valley Stream Central school officials said Nassau County police were investigating a separate threat made Tuesday and continued lockout procedures Wednesday, canceling after school activities and increasing police patrols, keeping students inside for lunch periods and leaving bags at home.
