Merrick man punched out victim, then ran over him, police say
A Merrick man has been charged with assault after he knocked out a man, then ran over him and hit a Good Samaritan outside a bar Sunday in Farmingdale, police said.
Jonathan Bencosme, 28, of Narwood Avenue, was arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead on charges of first-degree and second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, according to Nassau County police.
Arraignment records were not immediately available Wednesday. It also was not immediately clear if Bencosme is represented by an attorney.
Police said the assault occurred about 3:15 a.m. Sunday during a fight in the rear parking lot of The Nutty Irishman on Main Street in Farmingdale.
According to a police spokesman, Bencosme got into a verbal altercation in the parking lot and then “punched the 34-year-old victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground, knocking him unconscious.” Police said Bencosme then got into a 2015 Ford, put the car in reverse and accelerated toward a crowd of about a dozen people — including the unconscious victim and a 27-year-old man who was attempting to help him. The 27-year-old was thrown several feet, police said.
Bencosme then ran over the 34-year-old man with both the front and rear tires, police said.
“He runs over the victim, causing a skull fracture and cranial hemorrhage, breaking both arms,” a police spokesman said.
The Good Samaritan suffered injuries to his shoulders, hips and knees, police said.
Police said Bencosme then sped away on Rose Street.
Bencosme surrendered to Second Squad detectives on Wednesday, police said.
The condition of the victims was not immediately known.
