Man found shot to death in Farmingville home, police say

A man was found shot to death inside his Farmingville home Thursday night, and police are asking the public to help them catch his killer or killers.

The body of Wayne Booker, 54, was found on his living room floor, said Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer, commanding officer of the homicide squad.

“He was alone in the house, and there was no gun,” Beyrer said.

Beyrer would not say how many times Booker was shot, where in the body he was shot or the caliber of the gun used to kill him.

“In order to help the investigation, I don’t want to go into it,” he said.

Beyrer wouldn’t say whether the shooter or shooters broke into the house, which sits at the end of a cul-de-sac on Iroquois Avenue, but added that police are looking into how the perpetrator or perpetrators gained entry.

Booker, who police said lived alone, was supposed to meet a friend and the two were going to work on a car together. When the friend, who police would not identify, didn’t hear from Booker, he went to Booker’s house around 8:25 p.m. to check on him, and found him dead. The friend, who had a key to Booker’s house, let himself in, police said. He called 911.

The Suffolk County medical examiner’s office performed an autopsy on Booker’s body Friday to determine the time of death, Beyrer said.

Efforts to reach Booker’s family, including his adult children, were unsuccessful.

Neighbors on Iroquois Avenue on Friday said they were shocked to learn a homicide had taken place on their quiet block where children ride their bikes on the street in warm weather.

Two neighbors, who live several houses from Booker, said they did not hear gunshots, arguments or disturbances Thursday night before police and an ambulance arrived.

Faiza Rana, 43, said after the police arrived, she heard a man and a woman standing on the street crying.

“She said ‘What am I going to tell the kids,’ ” Rana said.
