An occupant of a Hicksville home was hospitalized with injuries described by authorities as critical after a Wednesday afternoon fire at the residence.

Nassau County Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said Hicksville firefighters responding to a 3:45 p.m. call found the injured occupant and another person outside the home. Both had exited the house before firefighters arrived.

The critically injured person was taken to Nassau University Medical Center.

Uttaro said the fire was still burning but under control by 5:30 p.m. Firefighters from Bethpage, Carle Place, Jericho, Levittown, Syosset and Westbury assisted Hicksville.

Hicksville fire dispatcher Chris Mercadante described the home as “heavily cluttered.”

Fire marshal investigators were on the scene Wednesday night but information about a cause of the fire was not immediately available.
