Nassau County police officers discovered human remains Tuesday afternoon in a wooded area in Garden City, the department said in a news release.

The officers had responded to a 911 call reporting "possible human remains" in an area behind a Lowe's Home Improvement on Dibblee Drive in Garden City. Upon arrival at 2:19 p.m., the officers discovered both an abandoned encampment and human remains.

The Nassau homicide squad and medical examiner responded to the scene and the remains were removed from the scene and sent to the medical examiner’s office, police said.

Detectives request anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911. All callers will remain anonymous.
