Man arrested in fatal hit-and-run in Island Park, police say
A Centereach man was arrested Wednesday after he fatally struck a pedestrian in Island Park on Monday night and fled the scene, police said.
Corey Henson, 31, was charged with leaving the scene of an incident (fatality) and leaving the scene of an incident (property damage), police said.
The victim, identified Tuesday as Dodanim Emanuel Chavez, 30, of Island Park, was struck on Long Beach Road, "suffered severe trauma," and was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to police.
The vehicle that hit him was headed south, north of Marina Place, at about 9:07 p.m. Monday and the driver fled the scene, police said.
Henson was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead. No other information was immediately available in online court records.
Also Monday, another pedestrian, a 55-year-old man, was critically injured when he was struck by a vehicle in Commack, police said. That driver remained at the scene and the victim was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.
In that incident, the man was walking north about 11:15 p.m., across the roadway in front of 6079 Jericho Tpke., when he was hit by a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek headed west, Suffolk police said.
