A Mastic Beach woman was sexually assaulted during a burglary at her home, Suffolk police said Wednesday night.

Two men entered the home about 4 p.m. Tuesday, police said. One of them sexually and physically assaulted the woman, who was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The perpetrators fled with an undetermined amount of cash and property, police said.

"This is a horrible incident," Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said Thursday at an unrelated news conference in Patchogue.

One man wore a dark-hooded sweatshirt and dark pants with a white stripe, police said, while the second wore a light-colored hooded sweatshirt and light-colored pants.

Harrison said the pair appeared to be either teenagers or in their early 20s.

Det. Lt. Dylan Friedlander, commanding officer of the Suffolk County Police Department's Special Victims Section, declined to comment on whether the woman was alone at the time of the assault and if the home was targeted by the burglars.

"Thankfully she is recovering at the hospital," Friedlander said. "These are not life-threatening injuries."

The Suffolk's Special Victims Section is investigating the assault.
