From his home in a Middletown, Conn., apartment complex, Raymond Clark is just steps away from the town's picturesque Main Street, where he and his fiancee, Jennifer Hromadka, frequently shop, according to local merchants.

Hromadka is regarded as friendly and outgoing by the staff at the Public Market Italian deli, where last week she bought tomatoes, while Clark often says hello to cashier Rosa Ramirez while buying his Newport cigarettes from the Downtown Food Market on the same block.

Tuesday night, police cars surrounded the complex and Clark was escorted out by police, who executed a search warrant there in connection with the death of Yale graduate student Annie Le, 24. Clark, a lab technician at the Yale Animal Resources Center where Le worked, has not been charged.

At Clark's previous residence at a New Haven apartment where he and Hromadka lived until spring, downstairs neighbor Annmarie Goodwin had nothing but bad things to say about Clark.

She said Clark was "very controlling" of his girlfriend, and that he once screamed at her 17-year-old son and unleashed a curse-laden tirade at him.

But a player in the same New Haven softball league that Clark plays in said he thought Clark was being unfairly singled out.

"He's a good kid," said J.T. Thomas of East Haven, who plays on a different softball team and whose wife is very friendly with Clark's sister. "I don't think he could have done this at all. I think they don't have any other leads."

At Branford High School, Clark played football, baseball and ran winter track, according to his senior yearbook. He was a member of the Asian Awareness club and two charity clubs.

Clark played third base for the Wild Hogs, a New Haven softball league, for the past year, said a league official who didn't want to be identified. His signature was a David Wright jersey and that, plus his resemblance to the Mets player, made him stand out, the official said.

Hromadka would watch his games, the official said. The couple was to be married in 2011, according to a wedding Web site.

Hromadka, who also works at the lab, wrote on her MySpace page about rumors of Clark's infidelity: "My boyfriend, Ray, if you don't know him, has no interest in any of the other girls at YARC as anything more than friends."
