North Amityville man acquitted of murder in 2015 shooting

A North Amityville man was acquitted Wednesday of murder and all other charges in the 2015 shooting of a Missouri man who was visiting his brothers on Long Island.

Jakyma Bunn, 40, maintained that he acted in self-defense when Louis Wilson, 44, and three of the victim’s brothers attacked him in the street after a North Amityville party on May 30, 2015.

“We’ve said all along my client was justified in what he did, and the jury obviously believed it,” said Bunn’s attorney, John Halverson of Patchogue.

A Riverhead jury cleared Bunn of second-degree murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

There is a bad history between Bunn and the Wilson brothers that goes back more than two decades, Halverson said.

The gun used in the fatal shooting was stolen, but everyone involved in the case denied owning it, the attorney said.

Halverson said Bunn wrested the gun from one of the Wilson brothers, and during the struggle shot Louis Wilson and wounded two of his brothers, each in the leg.

The Suffolk district attorney’s office declined to comment Wednesday.
