Riverhead police are urging the public to ignore advertisements posted around the town for a government auction the department said is a scam.

Numerous signs announcing a "Government Auction" and asking people to call a listed telephone number have been displayed around Riverhead, police said Sunday in a department news release.

“Officers of the Riverhead Town Police are patrolling the town and removing the signs as they are a violation of Town Code,” the release said. “The public is encouraged to contact the police department with the locations of any outstanding auction signs.”

Police on Sunday did not provide additional information about the signs or who may have posted them.

Officials with the Town of Riverhead were not immediately available for comment.
