Quick action by Riverhead police officers Monday night saved two people from a house that was fully engulfed in flames, police said.

About 6:42 p.m. Monday, police received a call about a house fire on Newton Avenue, according to a news release from the Riverhead Town Police Department.

When police arrived, they found the house ablaze with heavy smoke conditions, the release said. Officers discovered a resident near the front door who told them a man and woman were trapped in the house.

Police attempted to enter the house "but due to the heavy smoke and fire, retreated," the release said. The trapped woman was able to get to a front bedroom where officers pulled her through a window to safety. Police went to the rear of the house and found the man in a rear bedroom and pulled him to safety, also through a window, police said in the release.

The three residents were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, according to the police. A Riverhead police officer was treated at the scene for a burn. A firefighter was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for burn treatment. Information on the firefighter's condition was not immediately available.

Riverhead Fire Department, Riverhead Ambulance, Riverhead Fire Marshall’s office and other fire departments and ambulance teams responded to the scene.

The Riverhead Fire Marshal is investigating.
