A Suffolk County police officer was injured in a crash early Saturday when his cruiser was struck by a suspected drunken driver in Brookhaven, police said.

The Fifth Precinct officer was in his parked cruiser at about 3:30 a.m., manning a road closure for downed wires on Montauk Highway at Old South Country Road, when his car was broadsided by a 1996 Jeep driven by Dennis Knapp, 28, police said.

The police officer, who was not identified, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center to be treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Knapp, of Rockledge Drive in Shirley, was taken to Long Island Medical Center in East Patchogue to be treated for nonlife-threatening injuries from the crash.

Police charged Knapp with driving while intoxicated. He is set to be arraigned Sunday morning at First District Court in Central Islip.
