West Hempstead man assaulted 91-year-old, cops say
A West Hempstead man was charged Thursday in the assault of a 91-year-old man, Nassau County police said.
Police charged Devin Tanner, 38, of Maren Street, with assault and criminal mischief at 10:40 a.m. Thursday outside the older man’s Euston Road South home after receiving a call about an assault in progress there. Tanner had punched him in the face and punched a door in his home, causing more than $500 in damage, police said.
Tanner and the man had no known relationship, police said.
Detectives later identified Tanner as the subject of a call they’d received earlier, about a man slamming his head into the wall of Northwell Health Outpatient Rehab Facility at 600 Hempstead Tpke.
The facility is a drug addiction treatment center, but police would not say if Tanner was receiving treatment there.
The 91-year-old man was treated at his home. Tanner was taken to Nassau University Medical Center to be evaluated and will be arraigned when practical, police said.
