A Swiss man reported missing after swimming at Gibson Beach in Sagaponack was found unresponsive and could not be resuscitated, police said Tuesday.

Southampton Town police said the incident occurred on Oct. 4 and said the swimmer was later identified as Robert De Vos Burchart, 73, of Switzerland.

In a news release about the incident made Tuesday, police said a 911 caller reported De Vos Burchart missing at about 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 and said two officers, as well as detectives, marine unit officers and responders from the Bridgehampton Fire Department and ambulance crews joined the search. De Vos Burchart was found unresponsive on the beach off Gibson Lane.

Police said CPR was started at the scene, but De Vos Burchart was later pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Additional details were not immediately available.
