The first week of school got off to a bumpy start in the Hicksville school district, with the district acknowledging that school buses had delays in picking up and dropping off students.

Some parents reportedly said their buses simply never showed up.

“With the new school year underway and a new bus company handling our student transportation services, we are currently experiencing some delays during the morning pickups and afternoon drop-offs,” the district said in a statement Friday morning.

A spokeswoman for the district could not estimate the extent of the problem.

News 12 Long Island, quoting parents, said some school buses failed to show up on the first day of school Wednesday afternoon and again Thursday morning.

A district spokeswoman said there had been “remarkable improvement” Friday morning, but she did not have specifics.

The district identified the bus company as Baumann & Sons Buses, which did not return telephone calls Friday morning.

“Please be assured, the district is diligently working with our bus contractor to ensure all concerns are addressed in a timely and efficient manner,” the district statement said.

“The well-being of our students is our top priority and we are taking all available steps to alleviate any unnecessary delays,” the statement said.
