Mold forces Glen Cove pre-K classes to move to new school

Pre-K classes at a Glen Cove elementary school were canceled and then moved online this week after mold was discovered in the walls of a classroom, district officials said.
Beginning Monday, all pre-K classes at Deasy Elementary School will be relocated to the Eugene J. Gribbin Elementary School on Seaman Road as the mold is remediated, Superintendent Maria Rianna told parents in an Oct. 17 call and email.
"As a result of a leak, we were able to detect some mold issues behind our walls and, after testing the areas and in an abundance of caution, we are taking precautionary measures and will need to do more extensive cleaning that will interrupt classroom instruction," Rianna said. "As a result, we will be relocating Deasy's Pre-K classes to Gribbin School later in the week, ensuring that the work will not impact the program for any extensive time period."
A district spokeswoman said that to avoid the children moving back and forth several times this year, pre-K classes will remain at Gribbin for the remainder of the school year.
The pre-K classes were canceled on Monday and instruction was conducted virtually through district-issued iPads Tuesday and Wednesday and will continue for the rest of this week.
There has been no determination yet about the cause of the mold, but testing is continuing, a district spokeswoman said.
