A fight between two students at Hampton Bays High School on Friday left one with a stab wound and another arrested and charged as a juvenile, Southampton Town Police said.

Because the incident involved juveniles, police have not released the name of either student but a 16-year-old boy was charged with second-degree assault as a juvenile offender, police said.

The wounds suffered by the second student were described as "minor."

The nature of the dispute was not detailed by either police or school officials and it was not immediately clear if the knife involved was recovered.

In an open letter to the school community dated Friday, Hampton Bays Superintendent Lars Clemensen called the dispute "an unfortunate, dangerous and isolated incident" — and said it involved "a personal conflict between two individual students."

Although the school district has not commented directly on any disciplinary measures, Clemensen wrote: "Please be assured that the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Members of our administrative team are working with our law enforcement partners and will privately and appropriately address the situation to the maximum extent as per our Code of Conduct.

"We take these matters seriously and will not allow for personal conflicts to cross over into our school building," Clemensen wrote, adding: "Any student found to be in violation of our District Code of Conduct will face consequences."
