School safety officer Jason Schafer was honored Tuesday after he sprang into action, when Tyler White, a fifth grader at Cordello Avenue Elementary School began to choke on a water bottle cap. The officer began the Heimlich maneuver and was able to help dislodge the bottle cap from Tyler's throat.

The Wantagh and Connetquot school districts have been granted extensions to comply with the state's Native American mascot and imagery ban. Newsday education reporter Darwin Yanes and NewsdayTV's Ken Buffa report.

School districts making a 'good faith effort'

Starting this fall, a bell-to-bell smartphone ban will be implemented under the state budget, requiring school districts to ban students from using phones during the entire school day. NewsdayTV's Virginia Huie reports.

Anmol Gupta graduated from Sachem High School East and continued his education at Harvard University. He is now the founder and chief executive of Peech, a process mining consulting company. His advice to high school graduates is to work hard and things will come naturally. 

'Enjoy the moment' 

Nathan Siegelaub graduated from East Meadow High School and continued his education at Harvard University. When Nathan's mother was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer, he moved back home and became a full-time caregiver with his father.
