New York is the 12th best state for teachers, WalletHub says

With Common Core and state evaluations on their plates, teachers these days have their fair share of frustrations -- especially those who teach in New York.

But a new study, released just in time for International World Teachers' Day on Oct. 5, might actually change the way New Yorkers view their school system. According to personal finance website WalletHub.com, the Empire state is the 12th best in the nation for teachers.

WalletHub compared starting salary, unemployment rates and student-to-teacher ratios (among other factors) to compile its annual ranking of the best and worst states for teachers. The state that ranked number one was Massachusetts.

While the results may come as a surprise to the teachers across the nation who don't think they're being recognized financially for the important work they do, WalletHub says New York also comes in second best in both 10-year change in teacher salaries and public school spending per student. Based on their results, it seems the work of an educator, molding the minds of society's little ones, is substantial, and New Yorkers know it. 

The finance site adds that most teachers "are shortchanged every year -- their salaries consistently fail to keep up with inflation -- while the law demands they produce better students."

However, that's not as much of an issue in New York as in other states like Hawaii, where teachers reportedly make the lowest annual salaries. The results also revealed that New York teachers are facing more opportunities for raises than those who teach in other states.
