THE BUDGET

The district proposes a $99,494,105 budget for 2016-17, a 1.97 percent increase from the current $97,575,530. The local tax levy would increase by 2.98 percent, from $82,051,456 to $84,498,091.

This increase is equal to the district’s tax-cap limit, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget. School taxes on the average single-family home would increase by 0.63 percent, from $10,013 to $10,076.

The district is in contract negotiations with the teachers union, so step and other increases were not available. The budget adds two STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) teaching positions, and does not include any cuts in programs or services.

A proposition asks voters to establish a capital-reserve fund using $1.5 million from the district’s general fund, which the district said would have no impact on the tax rate. The fund would pay for building maintenance, including roofs and heating equipment. The capital-reserve fund would be added to each year, but would not exceed a total of $8.5 million.

THE CANDIDATES

Incumbents Sara Jones and Marianne Manning Russo and candidate David Ludmar are running unopposed for three at-large seats. Terms are three years.
